Week 16

Important Updates!

·       Thank you parents for signing up to donate an item (or two) to make the next couple of weeks extra special! It means so much when I am able to reach out for help and receive the support. It really is a team effort! We are in need of a few things, please look!
·       POEMS! Poems should be practiced nightly. I will be looking for memorization of all lines (including the author), voice, and appropriate pace. They are festive poems this time of year, how fun!
·       Collecting all Box Tops for the next 2 weeks. Continue to send them in. :]
·       Be sure your child is reading aloud to you nightly as well a logging any books read together on the book log. I am collecting book logs now for the term 3 report card.
·       Save the Dates:
§  December 11th- Poem Day!
§  December 14th- Box Tops Due
§  December 18th- Winter Sing Concert
§  December 21st- Winter Party as well as 12:25 dismissal
·       For the month of November we have been working on showing enthusiasm! I am happy to announce that Isabelle Millanes received the Core Value award for the month of November.  This was difficult to choose as I have so many students who genuinely love learning.  They all make this place the best place to grow. Isabelle has shown continuous efforts towards her enthusiastic actions. I see smiles, expressions on her face that show excitement, hear questions, as well as ideas that express curiosity.  She is an enthusiastic learner and contributes within all subject each and every day!  What fun she is to be around and learn with.
·       I would like to stress the importance of being on time. The morning and day is so much more enjoyable when it starts at 8:00 a.m. The recess time in the morning allows students to play and connect with friends before the learning starts. I also often see parents rushing through the drop off section close to 8:20 at speeds that are very unsafe. PLEASE if you are that parent, make an effort to show up on time (8:00) to avoid rushing and speeding. We have precious children and helping adults buzzing around campus at all times.
·       The students have been earning points at great rates! We really enjoy earning points for actions that are helpful to our learning community.  The start of the New Year will come with a fresh start for points. Every child will start at 0 and as a class we will be working towards a group goal of earning 1,000 points! Once we have met that goals we will be doing something extra special as a reward. Could be an ice cream party, game day, or extra play time outside…we will see! This will allow us to focus as a team to reach a goal!

Spelling words will be introduced as usual Monday- Wednesday with a review day on Thursday.  I would like to review the spelling expectations with you. They will write the nightly words two times each without markings going down the green homework sheet. Please be sure it is folded and they are writing along the start of the line and the fold. This allows for neat and organized habits.  Thursday is the only night when all words are written once without markings. Our weekly phonograms consist of ones that are in need of review as well as ones found in our spelling words. Letter formations and neatness count!

Reading
What a hit Owl at Home as been! The students LOVE having books of their own to read from. They also enjoy reading to the class. It is so enjoyable to listen to them read with fluency and expression. We will wrap up the last few chapters in our text.

Math
We are starting a crucial life skill, money identification and counting coins. Our money unit will take place over the next two weeks.  The students will identify coins and values next week before adding coins. Please pull out loose change at home! It really helps with life connections!

History
We were able to review the Mayflower journey prior to Thanksgiving. We have been and will continue to read about the New World, the Wampanoag people, relations between the two groups, and the first Thanksgiving.

Science
Layers of the Earth have been introduced and a mobile will be started to show the layers and the characteristics of each. How fun!

Have a cozy weekend,
Ms. Reger

Week 14

Here and there:
·       Collecting small recycled items! We have worked with the art elements of line and color.  My goal for us to complete a new art element piece while focusing on a texture art project in 2 weeks. In order to do so we are looking for items such as…
o   Sandpaper (new or used)
o   Newspaper
o   Small pieces of fabric
o   Pieces of cardboard
o   Pieces of foil
o   Pieces of bubble wrap
o   Yarn
o   Tisse paper
If you can donate an item for our project, please send in items next week! Thank you for thinking of us!
·       For the month of November we will be working on showing enthusiasm! It is one of my very favorite as if we show interest and excitement in everything we do life becomes a little more sweet. I am looking for students to share connections, ask questions, and always take any situation as an opportunity to learn something new!  I have already seen quite a few students take on this Core Value with such excitement. This month is going to be great!
·       Please be sure your child is on time to school and ready to learn. We have a few friends that arrive just after we have entered the classroom. Arriving before that it best, it also allows a chance for the students to play before school!
·       The short week will go quick, I wish you all a Thanksgiving full of family, gratitude, and time with one another. Enjoy it!

Next week will be another review week. Do not expect books to come home but instead review papers. This is a great time for us to reinforce those tricky rules and patterns. There will be a less words and more phonograms. Please use any extra time on the app to help!

Reading/ History
We have a couple more Cinderella stories to cover before we start an informative narrative unit on the Mayflower.  We will start to read about the journey to the new world before we dismiss for the weekend and continue with our unit when we return.

Math
Next week bring more computation time as students will add with a mix of problems that require regrouping and with problems that do not. As we strengthen our addition skills we will start a on telling time to the nearest hour and half hour.  What a life skill! I look forward to it!

Science
Next week we will be doubling up on our Native Americans unit.

Have a nice weekend,
Ms. Reger

Here and there:
·       What a busy week! From our studies to showing enthusiasm and respect we are learning and growing.  I enjoy all our days at school and hope your child does as well.
·       Next week, no school on Monday. Please take the time to thank or think of a Veteran as there are many sacrifices they make to keep us safe and free.

Cinderella stories from around the world will continue. The students have enjoyed recognizing magic elements, royal figures, problems, and the happily ever after endings. Next week we will be reading the African and Egyptian versions.

Next week we will be doubling up on our Native Americans unit.

History
The students made real connections as we talked about our own explorations. We will continue with our Native American unit as we study cultural beliefs and traditions. This week is all about the Pueblo people.

Week 12

Here and there:

·       Important! We are looking for a parent volunteer to organize and facilitate our next classroom party. The winter party will be on December 21st, from 12:25-1:25. If that amazing parent is YOU, send me a message on Dojo! I would like to meet with you by Thanksgiving break, allowing you time to plan and organize.
·       Poems have been assigned and practice has been included on nightly homework sheets. I am looking for complete memorization starting with the title and author. It would also be great for students to pause when appropriate and recite with expression. I look forward to November 8th.
·       Half day on Friday, November 9th.
·       We are collecting canned food! Please see the flyer sent home (today) and send in items to contribute.
·       This past month we made a great effort to find ways to solve day to day problems independently before asking for help. This is a task that takes great discipline with many opportunities to learn and grow.  When we have the ability to solve problems and find strategies that work for us we are able to become independent thinkers and doers. I appreciate all of our room 19 thinkers as they all hold a growth mindset yet there is one student I would like to acknowledge. Evie Collon continuous makes conscious decisions all on her own to make the most her school days. She is often ready for the school day and is prepared for each lesson, if a problem arises she finds a way to solve! I see that in her work and actions. I appreciate her and her ability to become such an independent thinker.

We are starting to dabble into more complex words, how exciting! New rules will be introduced and practiced along the way. It makes me so proud to see students sounding out the words, using their fingers to show phonograms, and telling his/her pencil what to write. All components are crucial while becoming strong readers and writers.   If you child forgets his/her notebook at school please talk with them about the importance of bringing that to and from school.  We have many opportunities to check to be sure we have ALL we need to complete our homework.  When it is forgotten not only do they miss recess but I will be then helping during that time to be sure it is done accurately. I think we all enjoy and deserve the morning brain break.

Reading
We fell in love with Anansi! The students really enjoyed the trickster tales, ask your child about them.  We will continue onto a fairytale unit while reading Cinderella stories from around the world. From the original story to the Korean, Chinese, and Egyptian fairytale we will find common elements and variations.

Math
Order number was a complex task, we will continue to work on the skill.  I am happy to announce that we will be adding within 100 without regrouping next week. How fun!

Science
Next week we will be doubling up on our Native Americans unit.

History

Have a fun and sunny weekend,
