Week 11 post

Here and there:
·         We are adjusting well to our new learning spots. It was time to reconfigure our room and to get students moved around.  One thing, at this point we are becoming a strong and comfortable classroom community…but with that also comes socializing. We have been working on our transition times specifically.  When we have a task to complete or job to do we do it without turning to our neighbor for story time. If you have a moment to talk with your child about this it would be very helpful.
·         Thank you all for signing progress reports and returning them.
·         Poems have been assigned and practice has been included on nightly homework sheets. I am looking for complete memorization starting with the title and author. It would also be great for students to pause when appropriate and recite with expression. I look forward to November 8th.
·         What a FUN Friday! The class party was the most enjoyable part of our day. A special thank you to Mrs. Millanes for her behind the scenes work. She was not only responsible for planning the activities but also organizing help and supply donations. We could not have had such a great time without her! THANK YOU!
·         For the month of October I would like us to specifically focus on PROBLEM SOLVING which means that I am looking for students to independently find answers to difficult problems and situations.  I am looking for examples of problem solving as we work, talk, and play at school.

A look at next week…
Spalding
We are starting to dabble into more complex words, how exciting! New rules will be introduced and practiced along the way. It makes me so proud to see students sounding out the words, using their fingers to show phonograms, and telling his/her pencil what to write. All components are crucial while becoming strong readers and writers.   If you child forgets his/her notebook at school please talk with them about the importance of bringing that to and from school.  We have many opportunities to check to be sure we have ALL we need to complete our homework.  When it is forgotten not only do they miss recess but I will be then helping during that time to be sure it is done accurately. I think we all enjoy and deserve the morning brain break.

Reading
We will be reading various stories about Anasi, a trickster spider. These books are some of my very favorite to read together. As we read we will focus on adjectives, plot, as well as compare and contrast.

Math
We will be ordering and comparing numbers to 1,000!

Science
Our objects in the sky unit was a fun one. This week we will start to read about the layers of the earth.

History
The students made real connections as we talked about our own explorations. We will continue with our Native American unit as we study cultural beliefs and traditions. This week is all about the Pueblo people.

Let’s make it a great week!
Ms. Reger
