Weekly Update for Sep. 6

A Few Reminders:
-NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY!
-Please be sure that your child is wearing closed toe shoes to school.
-The weather is getting crisp, any jackets or sweaters need to have a name on them to be sure they are kept with and returned to the right student.
-As a class we currently have 3,138 Dojo points! AWESOME! I have awarded many points to the class for participation, active learning, and creative thinking.  But the chatting during transitions, talking to a neighbor during instruction, and in lines are things that we are still working on. I LOVE our creative thoughts and the comfort factor with one another, but please remind your child of the best time to talk and share ideas.
-Our September Core Value will be Effort: putting all of your energy into doing something. We will be discussing and modeling effort in class.  Effort is valued because it is a conscious action that is made to apply our best self when completing tasks.  We can also make an effort with our actions and words when we are kind and helpful to the teacher and our friends.
-CONGRATS JESSE!!! I am honored to award the Responsibility Core Values certificate to such a hardworking, honest, and responsible student like Jesse.  He shows values of honesty and right choices within all areas of school, in the classroom, on the school yard, and at home when completing his assignments with care and punctuality.  I can always count on Jesse to follow directions with urgency as well as showing truthful and good actions, even without an adult present.  As a class we discuss that responsible students take accountability for their actions and words, always try their best, and complete tasks when being asked to do so. Jesse takes the initiative to do all these things and much more all on his own! He is a role model to others and I hope he knows that I acknowledge and admire his strong moral compass.  Jesse is a joy to be around and I look forward to watching him grow over his second grade year!

- What a great week! Thank you families for your support and communication as we are off to a GREAT year!

Literature
Next week we will be reading a long time favorite, Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon. As we read a few focus skills will be comprehension, inferencing, and sequencing.  Time will also be spent on compound words.  I appreciate the effort and participation as the students have been putting towards Spalding, this past week we focused on the 5 jobs that silent and final E’s hold.  We will continue to work on these rules as we practice spelling weekly.

Math
Onto Module 2, measurement! We are having a great time using centimeter cubes to measure. I sent home a math parent newsletter last week, this can provide and questions about our lessons, vocabulary, and various strategies.

Science
We had so much fun with the scientific method mini experiment! We will jump into states of matter and properties as we use our FOSS science kits!

History
I look forward to using our TCI text books as we read chapter 1, All About Communities.

Thanks for checking the blog and keeping updated on the latest and greatest in room 8! I hope you all enjoy a long weekend!
