This week and into the next

Happy Monday 1A families! 
Today we will be reviewing all of our recent units, the human body, math concepts introduced thus far, completing Frog and Toad Together, and continuing with Christianity.  Tomorrow we will be having a TURKEY TUESDAY!!! There will be an optional math packet that will be sent home, if your child would like to complete over the weekend it would be very beneficial, but is optional!

Please be sure your child has his/her name on all sweaters 

No reading groups tomorrow 

Sight word lists and sign off for reading log will start the week after break (in replace of comprehension reading log)

After we return from the long weekend, 
Literature
Onto the last book of Frog and Toad!  The students have had many opportunities to read aloud during the week (about every day!).  I LOVE hearing them read aloud with voice, fluency, and accuracy.  Keep up the great work first graders.  The students will continue to work on fluency, sequencing, text to self journals, and comprehension as we complete the last book of the series.  

Math
The students will be completing lots of hands on activities for our next unit, weight and capacity using non standard units.  We are looking for a few things to help with our math activities, washed out containers of all shapes and sizes that are a gallon sized or smaller.  If you have any recycled items to use, please send them in with your child on Monday or Tuesday following break. :] The students will be working with and assessed with weight concepts on Monday and Tuesday. The week will finish with capacity and assessments. 

** I will be sending home the measurement assessment from last week. We only dabbled into the concept briefly.  The students did very will with comparing (the first page of the test) but we will continue to work on measuring using non-standard units (the second page).  If you would like to correct with your scholar you may, we will be measuring and reviewing during math centers to be sure mastery is achieved.  I did not count the second page as a grade but did document scores to check for improvement at a later time.**

Science
Our scholars will complete a few review items including a study guide on Monday and Tuesday. A human body systems assessment will take place on Wednesday, expect a review study guide to be sent home.  Thursday and Friday we will spend a short time learning about scientific advances in relation to germs and vaccines, and the importance of diet and exercise!

History
Our Christianity unit will continue for one more week. Students will be able to learn and discuss important Christian holidays and events including Easter.  Students will also be able to  explain the crucifiction and the resurrection, and tell why this is important to Christians. Towards the end of our work week we will review important ideas and vocabulary as a class and prepare for an assessment.

Spalding 
Please continue to work on verbal phonogram review and the nightly spelling assignments. I have been extremely impressed with how we have improved with our participation during our class oral phonogram review!

Having a Grateful Heart
I would like to take the time to reflect on how thankful and blessed I am to have the opportunity to be apart of your child's educational journey. I wake up each school day anxious and excited to spend the say learning new things and creating intelligent, kind, and hard working people!  Every family should be so proud of their scholar, they each hold a special place in our classroom and in my heart.  I look forward to the rest of their first grade year, making it a memorable and happy one! You have one very thankful teacher this holiday season :]
