This week and into the next

Happy Monday 1A families!
Today we will be reviewing all of our recent units, the human body, math concepts introduced thus far, completing Frog and Toad Together, and continuing with Christianity.  Tomorrow we will be having a TURKEY TUESDAY!!! There will be an optional math packet that will be sent home, if your child would like to complete over the weekend it would be very beneficial, but is optional!

Please be sure your child has his/her name on all sweaters

No reading groups tomorrow

Sight word lists and sign off for reading log will start the week after break (in replace of comprehension reading log)

After we return from the long weekend,
Literature
Onto the last book of Frog and Toad!  The students have had many opportunities to read aloud during the week (about every day!).  I LOVE hearing them read aloud with voice, fluency, and accuracy.  Keep up the great work first graders.  The students will continue to work on fluency, sequencing, text to self journals, and comprehension as we complete the last book of the series.

Math
The students will be completing lots of hands on activities for our next unit, weight and capacity using non standard units.  We are looking for a few things to help with our math activities, washed out containers of all shapes and sizes that are a gallon sized or smaller.  If you have any recycled items to use, please send them in with your child on Monday or Tuesday following break. :] The students will be working with and assessed with weight concepts on Monday and Tuesday. The week will finish with capacity and assessments.

** I will be sending home the measurement assessment from last week. We only dabbled into the concept briefly.  The students did very will with comparing (the first page of the test) but we will continue to work on measuring using non-standard units (the second page).  If you would like to correct with your scholar you may, we will be measuring and reviewing during math centers to be sure mastery is achieved.  I did not count the second page as a grade but did document scores to check for improvement at a later time.**

Science
Our scholars will complete a few review items including a study guide on Monday and Tuesday. A human body systems assessment will take place on Wednesday, expect a review study guide to be sent home.  Thursday and Friday we will spend a short time learning about scientific advances in relation to germs and vaccines, and the importance of diet and exercise!

History
Our Christianity unit will continue for one more week. Students will be able to learn and discuss important Christian holidays and events including Easter.  Students will also be able to  explain the crucifiction and the resurrection, and tell why this is important to Christians. Towards the end of our work week we will review important ideas and vocabulary as a class and prepare for an assessment.

Spalding
Please continue to work on verbal phonogram review and the nightly spelling assignments. I have been extremely impressed with how we have improved with our participation during our class oral phonogram review!

In need of:
Gold, Red, Green glitter
large Elmer's Glue sticks

Having a Grateful Heart
I would like to take the time to reflect on how thankful and blessed I am to have the opportunity to be apart of your child's educational journey. I wake up each school day anxious and excited to spend the say learning new things and creating intelligent, kind, and hard working people!  Every family should be so proud of their scholar, they each hold a special place in our classroom and in my heart.  I look forward to the rest of their first grade year, making it a memorable and happy one! You have one very thankful teacher this holiday season :]

ENJOY YOUR THANKSGIVING WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE!

Spelling Bee

Dear Archway Parents and Students,

This year Archway Arete will be competing in the Scripps Spelling Bee! We are excited to refine our spelling and public speaking skills in this friendly and fun competition.

The timeline for the spelling bee program is as follows:
Mon. 11/16 – Spelling Bee information distributed to Parents and Students
Tues. 11/17– Optional spelling practice for 1st and 2nd graders in Mr. Posner's room from 3:10-4:10
Tues. 11/24 – Optional spelling practice for 3rd and 4th graders in Mr. Posner's room from 3:10-4:10
Tues. 12/1 – Optional spelling practice for 5th graders in Mr. Posner's room from 3:10-4:10

Friday 12/4 – Each child will take a grade-level qualifier test in their classroom. The test will be a selection of 20-25 words from the challenging Scripps 100 word list for your child’s grade level. The top five scorers in each class will be selected to participate in their oral classroom spelling bee.
12/7-12/10 – Oral classroom Spelling Bees will take place within this week.  The top speller from each classroom will go on to participate in the Archway Arete school-wide spelling bee on 1/6.

Wed. 1/6 – The school-wide spelling bee will be held in the evening at Archway Arete! The top spellers in each class compete in the school-wide bee and only the top speller in each grade will move on to the Great Hearts District bee after winter break.
Tues. 1/26 – The top five spellers from Archway Arete will compete in the Great Hearts District Bee at Archway Veritas! (Details and times will follow.)

While participation in the spelling bee program is voluntary, we encourage every student at Archway Arete to participate in their written and oral classroom spelling bees, as well as the optional spelling practice bees! Here are the word lists that your child will need to study to prepare for this competition: 2015, 2016 Spelling Bee Word Lists. You may also go to Spelling Bee Resources to find additional material and helpful strategies. Students should first learn the 100 study words for their grade level. Please note that the words on this list are quite challenging. The challenge is part of the fun! When your child masters the 100 grade specific words, they are ready to learn the study words for all other grade levels. There are a total of 450 words on the 2016 School Spelling Bee Study List. Finally, when your child masters the study words for grade levels 1-8, they may get a head start on the next level of competition by learning the words on the “Spell It.” This will prepare them for Great Hearts District Bee should they advance to this level of competition.

Please direct questions to Ms. Porcelli and Ms. Smith at MPorcelli@archwayarete.org and hsmith@archwayarete.org. We are delighted to celebrate the English language with your children through the Scripps spelling bee program!

Very truly yours,

Ms. Porcelli and Ms. Smith

SHAPES!

Weekly Posting :]

Reminders

·      Virtue of the month: Courage

Courage is also an important part of achieving academic and moral excellence for students. In our studies we must have the courage to attempt difficult problems and to be resilient when we are wrong. Courage is also necessary to stand up for what is right, particularly when the right thing to do is not easy or popular. Help us by recognizing when your child acts courageously in the month of November.

·       This year the Archway Arete Winter Concert will be held on Wednesday, November 18th at the Higley Center for the Performing Arts located at 4132 E. Pecos Road in Gilbert. The KG-2nd grade concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. with students arriving promptly at 4:45 p.m. The 3rd-5th grade concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. with students arriving at 6:30 p.m.  Be sure your child is dressed appropriately. Boys are expected to wear a white button down shirt with black pants and black shoes, for the girls, a white shirt with black skirt, tights, and shoes. I am looking forward to the performance!

·       Keep in mind that winter uniform is expected for students, i.e., no shorts.  Check out the handbook for a full uniform description.  As the weather cools, also please keep in mind that only uniform sweaters can be worn indoors.  Jackets may be worn to school for warmth but must be free of logos and messages.

·       Following Thanksgiving break we will switch up our reading routines. I want homework to be as beneficial as possible. We will take a break from the comprehension log. Students will be expected to read their story aloud to a parent, while listening for fluency.  Following the reading students will read from a list of first grade sight words. The words will be in a list for the students to read from, if your child would like to, many games and activities can be created using those words! The expectation starting December will be reading aloud each night and reading a short ist of sight words. If students are able to easily recognize the given sight words fluent reading will become more comfortable.

Next week

Math

Next week we will complete our 2D and 3D shapes with an assessment to follow on Wednesday! Please check the nightly math homework assignments carefully; there will be worksheet assignments Monday-Thursday. For our math centers we will be working with the geoboards (yay!), sorting addition problems to 20, reviewing all units thus far, and playing some shape dominoes! To finish the week we will spend a short time with measurement involving comparison of length and measurement using nonstandard units. This unit is a short 2 day chapter with a quiz on Friday.

Literature

Students will start to read from “Frog and Toad Together” and work on comprehension follow up over next week.  We are having a fun time reading about the adventures of Frog and Toad. We will also be working on the Literature element of Fantasy and Reality using short stories. Expect one to be done over the weekend for homework.

Science

Onto.THE NERVOUS system! Each day we will conduct small experiments using our sense of smell, sound, taste, and touch.  Understanding that our nerves send signals to the brain to help us understand the environment around us. The nervous system is our last unit on the human body, the two days prior to break will be spent on reviewing with a study guide and assessing.

History

Continuing with our world religions unit with Christianity. Next week we will be reading and learning about the basic beliefs of Christianity, the belief that Jesus Christ is the founder of Christianity, The First Christmas”., and places of worship.  In the World History and Geography section, we introduce children to not only ancient civilizations but also to topics in the history of world religions.  Many people who contributed to the Core Knowledge curriculum agreed that religion is a shaping force in the history of civilization and thus should be apart of what our children know about.  In introducing children to the history of world religions, we focus on major symbols, figures, and stories.  Our goal is to be descriptive, not prescriptive, and to maintain a sense of respect and balance. As we share about the symbols, figures, and stories I am sure that I mention to our scholars these are practices and beliefs of the people of that religion.  If you practice one of our studied religions please feel free to send in any symbols to share!

Poem of the Moth

Scholars will be expected to recite their “Lonely” poem towards the end of the week. I am specifically looking for fluency and voice while reciting.  The 2 days prior to Holiday Break we will be reading a Thanksgiving poem as a class.
