Week 35

 Save the Dates!  

  • April 30th- May 3rd- Ms. Reger is out 

  • Wednesday, May 5th- First Grade End of Year Test (please be here!)

  • May 3-7- Devices at school all week.

  • May 4th- Spongebob Birthday party during lunch for a chance to win a bike!  

  • May 17-20- ALOHA to Second Grade Week

  • Wednesday, May 19th- Hawiian Shirt Day!

  • May 20th- Last Day of School! 


A few notes:

  • Starting next Monday, May 3, masks will be "strongly recommended" for staff and students in all locations (in and outdoors) provided metrics do not change.

  • On Wednesday we will be doing an end of year test for phonological awareness and fluency. We ask that you do your best to be sure your child is here and be healthy that day. This allows for students to be assessed at the same time as well as helps with make up testing. 

  • On Tuesday, May 4th students have a chance to win a BRAND NEW BIKE! To enter the drawing simply make a birthday card for Spongebob! 

  • Our supplies are well loved, please send a fresh box of 24 count crayons with your child.

  • First grade has some fun stuff planned for the last few weeks of school as we say “Aloha” to second grade! I will be asking for some help with supplies for special projects. Please stay posted for a SignupGenius and help if you can! 

  • Every student needs to bring charged devices on Fridays!  

  • Send your child to school with a water bottle with their name on it. Thanks!



A Look at Next Week: 

ELA 

Devices will be at school all next week, we will be using them to conduct animal research projects.  We will be using Nat Geo Kids to discover fascinating facts about animals! We are also starting our space unit as we travel the solar system!


MATH

Our geometry unit continues with fractions and composing shapes! FUN!


SCIENCE 

The students have officially planted seeds, they will be able to watch their personal plants sprout! 


SOCIAL STUDIES 

We are traveling to various national parks. Using Nearpod our class will take a trip to some special locations across the country!

Week 34

A few notes:

  • We only have 4 more weeks of first grade! I cannot believe it. What an eventful year we have had. I am continually impressed with each and every one of my students for showing grit, hard work, and kindness. Lets soak up these last few weeks!

  • Thank you families for sending in those great pictures of your child in various habitats. It was fun for them to share about their experiences. 

  • I will be gone on Friday, Mrs. Irish will be here. YAY!

  • Every student needs to bring charged devices on Fridays!  

  • Send your child to school with a water bottle with their name on it. Thanks!



A Look at Next Week: 

ELA 

Now that we have explored the layers of the rainforest we will have a chance to read about the special animals found in each.  The students will be using their devices to find information about a rainforest animal. Just a reminder, please send the devices on Monday the 3rd along with the charger! 


MATH

Our money unit was a fun one! Next week we will start our geometry unit with 2-D shapes and attributes.


SCIENCE 

We have completed 2 out of the 4 experiments relating to plant life. We will be planting individually and watching our plants grow!


SOCIAL STUDIES 

We are traveling to various national parks. Using Nearpod our class will take a trip to some special locations across the country!

Week 33

 Save the Dates!  

  • April 16th- Last day with Mrs. Rodriguez! 

  • May 3-7- Devices at school all week. 

A few notes:

  • We have enjoyed having Mrs. Rodriguez with us this semester. She holds many natural teaching tendencies and the students continued to grow in her hands. We appreciate her and will miss her but know she will be joining a local district for the 21-22 school year. 

  • WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOME FUN PHOTOS! If you have a picture(s) of your child at the beach, in the desert, where it snows, and/or in the forest, please send them in! I would like to start a collage of pictures of us in our ecosystems of study!

  • Every student needs to bring charged devices on Fridays!  

  • The weather is warming up, summer is just around the corner, it is very helpful if you send a water bottle with your child daily.  They bring them to recess and have access to them in class. I have cups to offer for those who do not but a water bottle ready is best. Thanks! 

  • Practice those addition facts at home. Flash cards and computer games are helpful with this. We take addition and subtraction timed tests within 20 often in class. We are working on eff



A Look at Next Week: 

ELA 

We loved adding pictures to our project, send in any to add! The desert unit was fill of fictional stories with desert places and animals as well as informational texts. Next week we will focus on the various layers of the rainforest. This ecosystem is always a hit!


MATH

The students are working towards mastery as they identify both sides of coins. Next week we will continue with this as well as finding money sums. 


SCIENCE 

Let the science experiments begin! We will be using the scientific method as we discover what liquids help plants grow best.  During the week we will be planting, watering, observing, and taking notes to find new information about plant life. 


SOCIAL STUDIES 

We will review our continents and oceans.

Week 32

A Look at Next Week:

We will continue with our ocean studies for a few more days as the students are completing their research project on an ocean animal. We will finish the week with our next ecosystem of study, the desert! 


MATH

The students have done a great job telling time to the nearest half hour as they use the minute and hour hands appropriately. We will start our money unit as we identify coins and bills before we start counting money amounts. I have real and play money for the students or observe and count with throughout this unit! 


SCIENCE 

Let the science experiments begin! We will be using the scientific method as we discover what liquids help plants grow best.  During the week we will be planting, watering, observing, and taking notes to find new information about plant life. 


SOCIAL STUDIES 

We are taking some time to focus heavily on science.

Week 31

  • The weather is warming up, summer is just around the corner, it is very helpful if you send a water bottle with your child daily.  They bring them to recess and have access to them in class. I have cups to offer for those who do not but a water bottle ready is best. Thanks! 

  • It is so important to be here daily, we really miss them when they are away!

  • Thank you for sending in hangers, we had a blast making our ecosystem mobiles! 

  • Just a reminder to send in library books every Tuesday so fresh books can be checked out! 



A Look at Next Week: 

ELA 

Our forest habitat was only just the beginning of our ecosystems unit.  The students did a wonderful job reading about what makes a forest special as well as finding fun facts about forest animals.  We are diving into our ocean unit next week starting off with the layers of the ocean and what makes them each unique. 


MATH

We are doing a great job telling time to the nearest hour using both analog and digital clocks. We will be telling time to the half hour next!


SCIENCE 

Our new unit kicks off next week, the scientific method! We will learn about the special process that scientists use to discover new knowledge. 


SOCIAL STUDIES 

We are going to read, write, and discuss the importance of paying for our needs before our wants.

Week 30

A few notes:

  • Order a yearbook using the link and code below! 

  • School starts promptly at 7:30 each morning. Please be sure drop off takes place before this time to ensure they are in class and ready for our day together! 

  • For the month of March we will work on problem solving! This is such a big stepping stone as they gain the independence needed for second grade. We encourage the students so find answers and solutions to problems and situations. 

A Look at This Week: 


ELA 

How fun it was to read our chapter book over the past couple of weeks. Elmer and his adventures on Tangerina Island were fun and silly! Next week we'll start our integration of habitats during our ELA time. Our first habitat is the forest habitat, learning about the climate, plants, and animals found there. We will also be reading a few Frog and Toad chapters.


MATH

The students are measuring well with nonstandard units and comparing objects using the terms longer and shorter.  Next week we will start the new unit of telling time! This concept is an important life skill.  We will start with time to the nearest hour. 


SCIENCE 

We are completing our ecosystem mobiles, stay tuned on Classdojo for the finished product!


SOCIAL STUDIES 

We will continue with economics as we discover what it means to save and earn money.

Week 29

Save the Dates!  

  • April 2nd- No School


A few notes:

  • The blog this week is short and sweet. We are back into the swing of things and ready for our fourth quarter!

  • Thank you for signing your child’s report card envelope and sending back. 

  • If your child likes to grab breakfast on the way to class each morning it is best they arrive closer to 7:15. We are having a few late drop offs and are eating when we are starting our day. It is best to finish eating before we begin our learning. Thank you! 

  • We will be reading from a few more chapter books this spring. We will be reading “Frog and Toad are Friends” next week. If your child would like to have their own copy to read from please use the links below! We will be gathering a class set for all to read from but if they want their own feel free to purchase.

A Look at Next Week: 

ELA 

The students are loving reading from chapter books and traveling along with Elmer Elevator. We will continue with our story next week. 


MATH

We have been working with various math tools as we compare lengths. Next week we will use nonstandard units to measure. 


SCIENCE 

We are working on our ecosystem mobiles, identifying and creating pieces of the project to represent components of an ecosystem. 


SOCIAL STUDIES 

The students have done a great job identifying needs and wants. Up next… saving and earning for our needs and wants in life. 


We will continue with our routines and expectations. We want to be second grade ready! Thank you for reading!
