A few notes:

  • Welcome Paige and Ella to our classroom. We are happy to have you and you both fit right in!

  • We are so lucky to have two amazing PE teachers. They have organized a fun Turkey Trot for the kids to be apart of during their scheduled PE time. It is going to be a great time, tennis shoes and/or running clothes are best for school on Monday. I will try and snap some Dojo pictures to share with you!

  • TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD studies… We are going to be traveling the globe to find out what various countries participate in during this time of year. The study brings us to 9 countries, as we look at their location, climate, currency, and how they celebrate the holiday season such as decorating with a tree and/or enjoying special recipes. Every year I usually have a snack and craft ready after we have read about our destination, I do not want to let COVID stop that from having some fun… so we will be creative! If you can donate any of the following items from the link below, it would be greatly appreciated! We are looking for craft items and individually wrapped treats. THANK YOU, we would love for our donation list to be complete to take in every bit of this unit.

A few notes:

  • It is a quiet week with only a few memos, thank you for taking the time to read. A home-school connection is an important one.

  • I have enjoyed watching our fluency and word recognition grow. They are also very interested in our Thanksgiving unit.  This has been fun!

  • The caring actions I have seen this week has really made my heart melt. I am hearing more “Thank You”, seeing more door holding, and watching as they take care of one another while working and playing. We are raising some pretty special humans!

  • OOPS! I am sorry for the Turkey Tom due date of the 9th, feel free to send in Turkey Tom any day next week! Get creative and have fun with it!

  • I love posting to Dojo and do my best to share all that we are up to. I get poor service in the building so posts may be later in the day or the next day but I try and post while we work. Just FYI! :]

Our fables unit has been a wonderful way to show extra connections. The students have “read between the lines” to find true morals from our stories.  We will continue with a few more next week. A few notes:

  • What a wonderful week it has been. I have seen such growth in their academic stamina.  We are able to get so much in during our school days. Our community rocks!

  • I have sent home both September math journals and September writing journals. These were done at the students own pace, some pages are complete while others they did not get to. This is OK.  If you would like to take a look at our writing journals and math concepts please feel free to.

  • Welcome November, we have a full month planned with new skills and concepts. Please be sure your child is healthy, arrives on time, and has all needed supplies to make the most of their school days.

  • I have so loved seeing the ENTHUSIASM each and every school day throughout the month of October. For the month of November we will be working on showing caring actions as we think about the concerns and feelings of others.  I look forward to seeing actions that are helpful and good natured.

  • Thank you for the donations to help make our Friday the 30th extra special. I appreciate you!

  • YAY for Scholastic! I have finally established a class code, this means you may order books online through Scholastic until November 16th. We are starting new November writing journals, these prompts are done independently when they arrive each morning and discussed before starting class at 7:30.  ELA for the next few weeks will consist of anything and everything Thanksgiving! From types of food, to pilgrim and Native American living then and now, it will be great to learn more about the holiday!

MATH

We are relating addition and subtraction with fact families, looking at true/false number sentences, as well as comparing numbers. I have been impressed with their ability to take away when using subtraction.

SCIENCE

Continuing with the human body with the circulatory system and digestive system.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will be working along with our ELA unit to study events of the past that contributed to the creation of Thanksgiving.

I hope you all have a safe and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Week 11

 Save the Dates:

  • October 30th- No costumes but you can wear black and orange! SPOOKY!

  • November 5th- PTO meeting at 2:30 using the link below, it would be really nice if we had a parent or two from our room represent first grade as well as our class! If you can tune in please do.  https://mpsaz.webex.com/mpsaz/j.php?MTID=m0aac231810733ce91c855afba42a2cd3

  • November 11th- No School

  • November 16th- Ms. Reger is out

  • November 26-27- No School

  • December 3rd- PTO at 2:30

Updates:

  • Thank you SO much for the donations to help make Friday, October 30th extra special. Our day will be filled with festive activities within our classroom. Our community is the best!

  • This month we are showing enthusiasm for school. When we are in a positive, happy, excited mindset great things happen. This has been fun to see! Keep it up students!

  • Please pack a water bottle with your child to school. The drinking fountains are only used to refill bottles and cups.  It helps so much when they have access to their own water bottle.

  • We had a nice donation of class lanyards a few weeks ago, if your child has their lanyard on the mask they are wearing to school it is extremely helpful! If they do not have a lanyard the students use a paper bag that is easily misplaced and then replaced. Again, the lanyards are helpful!

  • Be sure your child is reading their fluency passages nightly and write down how many words they read to you on the second page of the packet.  One math page needs to be done nightly as well. These skills are a review from what we learn in class.

  • Starting Monday, be on the lookout for a first grade friendly agenda page at the beginning of our AVID binders. This page will  offer another line of communication about homework routines, assignments, and expectations. I hope this helps!

  • If your child enjoys breakfast before school it is best if they arrive by 7:15/7:20 to allow them time to eat before we begin learning at 7:30. Thanks!

  • Dismissal on Wednesdays is at 12:00.

  • If you child is not feeling well please take a day or two off of school to recover. This helps ensure we are all healthy while at school. If your child is sent home with COVID symptoms by the school nurse they will need to remain at home for 10 days OR present a negative COVID test. It is best to just stay home and rest!

  • If your child is at home for the 10 days we will be in contact with you about school work. Almost all work will be self guided with access to Canvas with a few papers sent home of what we are doing in class. If/when this situation arises we will manage on a personal basis.

  • I am working on getting Scholastic set up for our class. This way you can order books online for home. I LOVE scholastic!

A Look at Next Week:

ELA

The bat unit has been informative, interesting, and super exciting. We will wrap up bats and start a week of spiders. Our spider stories will be a combination of fiction and nonfiction while reading Stories of Anansi and informational texts.  This Anansi stories are some of my personal favorites.  We will learn about his tricky ways and find morals from the stories.

MATH

Subtraction has been a blast! We have been using counters to take away, I am beyond impressed with this skill. Next week we will continue with subtraction and work with number lines and counting back.

SCIENCE

We are in a new unit… the human body! From the respiratory system to the skeletal and circulatory system we will learn all about what makes us healthy and active.

SOCIAL STUDIES

What fun it has been from learning but mistakes that worked! From the doughnut hole to the piggy bank the students are making great connections!

Again, thank you for supporting our room 6 community!

Ms. Reger

  • November 26-27- No School

  • December 3rd- PTO at 2:30

Updates:

  • How nice it has been to see every child (going on) 5 days a week! We are covering SO much from content to school work habits. The students are catching onto our routines and expectations, this allows for efficient and effective lessons while together in class. I am proud of them for showing such excitement for their learning!

  • This month we are showing enthusiasm for school. When we are in a positive, happy, excited mindset great things happen. This has been fun to see! Keep it up students!

  • Thank you for your time during parent teacher conferences, it was such a pleasure to see you and take the time to personally talk about your child.  This home/school connection is an important part of school success.

  • Please pack a water bottle with your child to school. The drinking fountains are only used to refill bottles and cups.  It helps so much when they have access to their own water bottle.

  • Looking for parent help from home! This will be a random task at any point but mostly consists of cutting, staple work, laminate cutting, etc. These tasks help prep us in class, focusing on more content. If you would like to be on my list to send work home here and there send me a message on Dojo!

  • Wear tennis shoes to school to ensure safe, active play.

  • If your child enjoys breakfast before school it is best if they arrive by 7:15/7:20 to allow them time to eat before we begin learning at 7:30. Thanks!

  • If your child is absent from school ( a day or two) for whatever reason I will only be sending home the most important work. So much learning takes place verbally and with tools I only have in the classroom. Attendance here is best!

  • Any transportation changes will need to be communicated with through Dojo, a note, or the office. They will mention a change to me during the day but until I have parent confirmation they dismiss as normal. This just ensures that students arrive at home safely.

  • Devices can be left at home unless communicated otherwise.  We may use them in class periodically for reports or exploration but as of now keep them in a safe place at home.

  •  With Halloween approaching and wanting to have a little fun we are looking for the following items, if you can send any items in by 10-26 that would be great!

    • White q-tips (2 boxes large total)

    • 2 bags of white chocolate chips

    • 2 bags of milk chocolate chips

    • 2 bags of candy corn

    • A box of Chex cereal

    • 1 box of snack or sandwich size baggies

 A Look at Next Week:

ELA

We are LOVING our bat unit. The students are already finding fascinating facts about various species of bats.  We will continue with this study as we read a bat poem, write an informative narrative, and compare and contrast.  Out bat books will be sent home after our unit so you can check out what we have been up to!

MATH

Onto… SUBTRACTION! YAY! The students will be introduced to subtraction as we identify parts of a subtraction sentence and model the take away strategy. We are looking forward to trying something new!

SCIENCE

We are onto a new unit… the human body! From the respiratory system to the skeletal and circulatory system we will learn all about what makes us healthy and active.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Another new unit… the magic of mistakes! We will look at various inventions and creations that happened by mistake! Your child will share about these when they bring their work home in a few weeks!

It has been such a joy to be here together 5 days a week. I look forward to next week!

Have a wonderful weekend!

- Ms. Reger

Week 9

 Hello room 6 families!

  • Thank you families for signing up for a conference time. It was so nice to see you signing up right away! It will be great to have the time to talk about your child's education.

  • Just a reminder that we do not have school next week, happy fall break! And the week of October 12th it is a 1:00 dismissal time on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday will be a 12:00 dismissal time.

  • I am preparing to see ALL students 5 DAYS A WEEK staring October 12th. YAY!

  • As a community we have worked hard on showing perseverance and responsibility while kicking off our first grade year. For the month of October we will focus on having enthusiasm.  Having the excitement, joy, and love for learning goes such a long way. I see student growth skyrocket and the days all the more fun when we show enthusiasm! We will review daily what enthusiastic actions look and sound like.

  • Please be sure your child has his/her lanyard on their mask when they come to school. They LOVE the lanyards, it is helpful not having the bags float away with masks, and it ensures no one picks up a mask that does not belong to them.

  • Next week, we will be learning all about our classroom college, NAU! Together we will be finding facts about our very own mountain town college and all that it offers for continued education goals. I am excited to represent this school and to share my experiences learning there for not one but two degrees!

  • Homework routines will begin October 19th, I look forward to getting back into “normal” school routines very soon!

  • Be sure your child arrives on time or close to 7:15 if they would like breakfast. We start our learning at 7:30.

  • Check Class Dojo for messages as well as the class story to see what we are up to!

  •  Have a FUN break! I hope you all relax, have some fun, and enjoy who you spend your time with. Stay safe and try to stay cool!

A look at next week:

MATH

We have one final week of addition work, we are specifically looking at addition with 10. We are also skip counting, working on comparing numbers, and using number lines to help us solve.

ELA

We are getting BATTY! Over the next couple of weeks we will be learning all about bats. The students will be reading and writing informational text.  I look forward to this unit of study!

SCIENCE
We are wrapping up our physical science unit with solids, liquids, and gases.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Our American Symbols will conclude with a Pledge of Allegiance activity and assessment. From the Statue of Liberty to Mount Rushmore and the Liberty Bell, the students have enjoyed learning about the special places within our country.

Thanks for reading!
